Abstract

Adolescent pregnancy is defined as pregnancy occurring in females aged 10–19 years, in accordance with the age range for adolescence established by the World Health Organization (WHO). Pregnancy during this period is of particular concern because it occurs during the transition from childhood to adulthood, a stage characterized by ongoing physical, psychological, and social development that has not yet reached full maturity. Globally, the prevalence of adolescent pregnancy remains high. The persistently high prevalence across many countries indicates that adolescent pregnancy continues to represent a significant global public health challenge requiring serious attention. Pregnant adolescents are at a higher risk of developing anemia, preeclampsia or eclampsia, preterm birth, stillbirth, and low birth weight infants compared with women of reproductive age. Other obstetric complications associated with adolescent pregnancy include preterm prelabor rupture of membranes (PPROM), oligohydramnios, and various maternal conditions that may adversely affect pregnancy outcomes, thereby necessitating closer antenatal surveillance. Therefore, efforts to prevent adolescent pregnancy should focus on improving reproductive health education, expanding access to adolescent-friendly healthcare services, and strengthening the role of families and communities in supporting adolescent reproductive health.
