Abstract

Pregnant women, postpartum women, infants, and toddlers are among the vulnerable groups that face increased health risks during disasters. Posyandu volunteers and midwives play a strategic role in maintaining the continuity of maternal and child health (MCH) services during emergency response periods; however, their capacity for disaster preparedness still needs to be strengthened. To implement and evaluate training and mentoring activities regarding the roles of volunteers and midwives in MCH preparedness during disaster situations. This community service activity involved 25 participants (21 Posyandu cadres, 4 midwives) in the service area of the Lubuk Alung Community Health Center, Padang Pariaman Regency. Evaluation was conducted through pre- and post-tests of knowledge (15 multiple-choice questions) and a training implementation evaluation questionnaire (15 statements on a 1–5 Likert scale). The data were analyzed descriptively. Participants’ average knowledge scores before the training were already very high (mean 14.88 out of 15; 99.20%) and remained high after the training (mean 14.72 out of 15; 98.13%), with an average change of −0.16. No participant’s score increased; 22 participants (88%) showed no change in their scores, and 3 participants (12%) experienced a decrease of 1–2 points. The training evaluation revealed a very positive response (overall mean of 4.70 on a 5-point scale), with the highest appreciation for the relevance of the material and the comfort of the training venue. The activity was carried out well and received a positive response from participants. The lack of an increase in knowledge scores is likely related to the participants’ already very high baseline knowledge before the training began, rather than an indication of the training’s failure. Training and mentoring remain relevant as part of strengthening community-based maternal and child health (MCH) disaster preparedness.
